Since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, there has been a substantial amount of new STAR WARS material, including comic books, novels, TV series, and games. What casual fans may not know is that all of these productions and publications are now officially part of the new canon, meaning that they are included in the fictional history of that galaxy far, far away. With this new STAR WARS canon timeline, you can now stay current on everything STAR WARS, and how these materials are connected with both the old and new films.

33 BBY- Darth Maul (2017)

Set in Maul’s younger years before his first appearance in THE PHANTOM MENACE, this comic series follows his training under Darth Sidious. Anxious to test his new skills against the Jedi, Darth Maul must learn to patiently follow his Master’s commands, forcing him to vent his frustrations in the criminal underworld of the galaxy.

33 BBY- Star Wars Adventures (2017)

This new comic series appeals to fans of all ages and will cover stories before THE PHANTOM MENACE all the way up to THE LAST JEDI. Learn more about your favorite characters, as well as some new ones, as the STAR WARS galaxy grows ever larger.

32 BBY- Episode I: The Phantom Manace (1999)

The first of the prequel trilogy, THE PHANTOM MENACE follows two Jedi Knights, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, as they help the Queen of Naboo, Padmé Amidala, free her planet from the greedy Trade Federation. Along the way, they discover a special boy named Anakin Skywalker whom Qui-Gon wishes to train in the Force as a Jedi Knight.

29 BBY- Obi-Wan & Anakin (2016)

This comic series focuses on the training of young Anakin shortly after Obi-Wan has taken him as his apprentice. Three years after the events of THE PHANTOM MENACE, Master and Padawan are sent on a mission to a remote planet, where they will both be pushed and tested to their limits.

22 BBY- Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

ATTACK OF THE CLONES is set 10 years after THE PHANTOM MENACE, Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers the creation of a massive clone army for the Galactic Republic while Anakin Skywalker & Padmé Amidala begin to develop feelings for one another. With the help of the Republic’s new clone army and the Jedi army, the trio gets caught up in a massive battle against the Separatists led by Count Dooku.

22 BBY- Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel (2016)

Described as the must-have prequel to the standalone film ROGUE ONE, CATALYST introduces readers to Orson Krennic, a member of Chancellor Palpatine’s secret Death Star project, and the Erso family including Galen, a brilliant scientist; his wife, Lyra; and their young daughter, Jyn. After saving Galen and his family, Krennic offers Galen an opportunity to continue his research that will ultimately lead to the Death Star’s destructive power.

22 BBY- Jedi of the Republic: Mace Windu (2017)

Shortly after the start of the Clone Wars, Jedi Master Mace Windu finds himself in a new role as he leads a small unit of Jedi into battle.

21 BBY- The Clone Wars (2008)

This animated film serves as an introduction to the television series of the same name. Familiar heroes from ATTACK OF THE CLONES return here as the Republic and the new clone army battle against the Separatists led by Count Dooku. We are also introduced to some new key characters, including a new Jedi apprentice named Ashoka.

19 BBY- Dark Disciple (2015)

Based on unproduced scripts from THE CLONE WARS, this novel follows popular characters Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos. The two must work together, despite their differences and complex feelings for one another, in a joint effort to destroy Count Dooku and bring an end to the Clone Wars.

19 BBY- Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir (2014)

THE CLONE WARS revealed that Darth Maul survived Obi-Wan’s attack in THE PHANTOM MENACE, but there was more to Maul’s story than was presented in the TV series. This comic series is based on unused CLONE WARS scripts, and is a continuation of Maul’s story as he struggles against his former master, Darth Sidious.

19 BBY- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

In REVENGE OF THE SITH, Anakin learns that Padmé is pregnant and begins suffering nightmarish visions of her death. Chancellor Palpatine, finally revealed as Darth Sidious, begins to tempt Anakin with the Dark Side of the Force, promising new powers that can save Padmé’s life. Anakin then begins his treacherous path to the Dark Side, betraying the Jedi Order and his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

19 BBY- Darth Vader: Dark Lord of The Sith (2017)

This new Vader-centered series focuses on the Dark Lord immediately following his fall to the Dark Side as depicted in 2005’s REVENGE OF THE SITH. Haunted by the death of Padme and his newly sustained injuries, Vader must learn what it takes to really give himself to the Dark Side of the Force under his new master, Emperor Palpatine.

18 BBY- Ahsoka (2016)

This young adult novel explores the adventures of former Jedi Ahsoka Tano following her departure from the Jedi Order and the devastating Order 66 that eliminated most of the Jedi Knights. Struggling to find her place, Ahsoka finds herself compelled to continue fighting the atrocities of the Empire.

18 BBY- Kanan: The Last Padawan (2015)

This series is comprised of six issues dealing with Kanan’s experiences before, during, and after Order 66, the order that resulted in the annihilation of the Jedi Order. Gain insight into Kanan’s character well before he appears in the TV series, REBELS.

14 BBY- Tarkin (2014)

Learn more about the notorious Grand Moff who was first introduced in A NEW HOPE in 1977. This novel explores Tarkin’s background and how he became one of the Emperor’s most trusted leaders alongside Darth Vader.

14 BBY- Lords of the Sith (2015)

In this novel, the Imperials are fighting to gain control over the planet Ryloth. However, a group of freedom fighters plan to strike at the heart of the Empire when the Emperor and Darth Vader are shot down on the hostile planet. Now, the two Sith Lords must rely on each other to fight their way out of their dangerous situation.

14 BBY- The Rise of The Empire (2015)

This collection includes both A NEW DAWN and TARKIN, and includes three all-new short stories that provide links and connections between the two novels.

13 BBY- Rebel Rising (2017)

Following the death of her mother and the abduction of her father, Jyn falls under the care of radical rebel fighter Saw Gerrera, who teaches her the skills needed to effectively fight the Empire. However, fighting alongside Saw causes Jyn to question how far she is willing to go for both the man and the cause.

11 BBY- A New Dawn (2014)

This novel serves as a prequel to the animated series REBELS. It follows former Jedi Kanan as he tries to survive in a galaxy where the Jedi Order is all but extinct. But when the Empire attacks someone close to Kanan, he must choose whether to flee or stand and fight.

11 BBY- Lost Stars (2015)

This novel is particularly unique, in that it begins before the events of A NEW HOPE and spans beyond the conclusion of RETURN OF THE JEDI. The story follows two childhood friends who join the Empire and fall in love, but they are torn apart by their allegiances after one defects to the Rebel Alliance while the other remains fiercely loyal to the Empire.

10 BBY- Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

This anthology film explores the origins of the infamous smuggler roughly ten years before he met Luke and Leia in A NEW HOPE. The story will also explore how Han and Chewie came to be companions. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY is directed by Ron Howard and set for release May 2018. Be sure to check back for more confirmed details as they are revealed.

7 BBY- Thrawn (2017)

Famed author Timothy Zahn finally gets to bring his iconic character into official STAR WARS canon with the release of the new novel THRAWN. The novel will chronicle the character’s early days in the Empire as he rises through the ranks to become a Grand Admiral. The exact setting of the novel is still unknown.

5 BBY- Rebels (2014 - )

This animated series follows a group of young Rebels, led by Jedi Knight Kanan, who seek to disrupt the Empire’s dealings. Together, they will encounter new friends and villains as well as some familiar ones.

5 BBY- Guardian of the Whills (2017)

Baze and Chirrut, once Guardians of the Whills and protectors of the Kyber Temple on the planet Jedha, must find a way to fight the tyranny of the Empire after its occupation of the planet. When Saw Gerrera arrives with ambitious plans to bring down the Empire, Baze and Chirrut readily join the cause. Exact placement in the STAR WARS timeline is still unknown. Check back for updates.

3 BBY- Leia: Princess of Alderaan (2017)

In this young adult novel, author Claudia Gray explores Leia’s transition from child to adult as a young member of the Rebel Alliance. Set on Leia’s 16th birthday, the story follows our famous princess as she discovers that her parents are secretly involved in plotting against Emperor Palpatine and his Imperial hold on the galaxy.

1 BBY- Rogue One: Cassian & K-2SO (2017)

In ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, you saw how Cassian and K-2SO became legends among the Rebel Alliance. Now, discover how the two came to be the unlikely duo you saw in the film.

0 BBY- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Set just before the events of A NEW HOPE, this film is the first anthology film that is not an episodic entry in the STAR WARS saga. ROGUE ONE tells the story of Rebel Alliance soldiers who infiltrate the Empire in order to steal the secret plans to the Empire’s new ultimate weapon, the Death Star.

0 BBY- Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

The first film of the original trilogy, A NEW HOPE follows young Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin Skywalker, as he joins Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia in the attempt to fight against the Galactic Empire led by Emperor Palpatine and his ruthless enforcer, Darth Vader. Once these Rebels acquire the engineering plans to the Empire’s new weapon, the Death Star, they formulate a plan that will exploit its one weakness.

0 BBY- Battle Front: Twilight Company (2015)

This novel takes the fight against the Empire to the front lines where a group of Rebel soldiers, known as Twilight Company, fight hard against Imperial stormtroopers. After being ordered to retreat from the Empire’s growing forces, Twilight Company finds a way to possibly gain a victory during the retreat.

0 BBY- Battle Front II: Inferno Squad (2017)

Following the destruction of the Death Star, the Empire is desperate to hunt down those responsible for the space station’s demise and the theft of its plans. An elite team of Imperial soldiers, known as Inferno Squad, is then tasked with hunting down Saw Gerrera’s Partisans, who continue Gerrera’s controversial tactics to bring down the Empire.


1 ABY- Princess Leia (2015)

This comic series follows Princess Leia immediately following the events of A NEW HOPE. Leia struggles to deal with the destruction of her home world while also continuing her resolve to help the Rebellion. Consequently, she sets out to rescue those who have survived Imperial attacks.

1 ABY- Darth Vader (2015)

This comic series further develops the character of Darth Vader following the destruction of the Death Star in A NEW HOPE. Discover what happens to the most feared figure in the galaxy, from the time his ship spirals out of control away from the Death Star to his first appearance aboard the Super Star Destroyer in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

1 ABY- Heir To The Jedi (2015)

This novel is set after the destruction of the Death Star and follows Luke, who has become a valuable asset to the Rebel Alliance. When the Rebels learn of a gifted cryptographer being forced to work for the Empire, they send Luke on a daring mission to rescue her from the Empire’s clutches so that she may be useful in the Rebellion’s cause.

1 ABY- Marvel's Star Wars (2015)

As opposed to focusing on one character from A NEW HOPE, this large comic series follows the adventures of all your favorite original trilogy characters, including: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2-D2, and C-3PO. Get to know what each character has been up to before they show up again in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

1 ABY- Chewbacca (2015)

This 5-part comic series centers on everyone’s favorite Wookie, Chewbacca. After the events of A NEW HOPE, Chewie finds himself stranded on a planet during a mission for the Rebel Alliance. With the help of a friend, Chewie must battle Imperials as he attempts to escape the planet and complete his mission.

1 ABY- Vader Down (2015)

This comic series is unique in that it crosses over with the DARTH VADER series and the MARVEL STAR WARS series. In VADER DOWN, Vader finds himself going up against the entire Rebel Alliance, including characters from other comic series.

1 ABY- Lando (2015)

Have you ever wondered what Lando Calrissian was up to before he became the Baron Administrator of Cloud City? This comic series explores the events that lead Lando to Cloud City where Han and Leia ultimately find him in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

1 ABY- Doctor Aphra (2015)

First introduced in the DARTH VADER comic series, Doctor Aphra gets her own comic series. Forced into hiding from Darth Vader, the morally shady archaeologist is trying to find her way back into archaeology despite her enormous debts, while also tracking down those who trained and tortured Black Krrsantan.

1 ABY- The Screaming Citadel (2015)

A crossover between the MARVEL’S STAR WARS and DOCTOR APHRA series, this comic pairs Luke Skywalker with the rogue archaeologist as they embark on a mission to the heart of the notorious Screaming Citadel.

2 ABY- Weapon of a Jedi (2015)

This junior novel is set shortly after A NEW HOPE and follows Luke Skywalker, now celebrated as a hero among the Rebels. Luke continues to listen and be inspired by the Force, which he must use if he is to save a young girl on a strange planet. There, Luke must also face a new enemy known as Sarco Plank.

2 ABY- Smuggler's Run (2015)

Set between A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, this junior novel follows Han Solo and Chewie as they are sent on a secret mission for the Rebel Alliance, all while being hunted down by merciless bounty hunters and a fierce Imperial agent.

2 ABY- Han Solo (2016)

Set between the events of A NEW HOPE & EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, this comic series follows the galaxy’s favorite smuggler as he takes a secret mission from the Rebel Alliance to rescue numerous informants and spies, which also involves Han entering the biggest race in the galaxy.

3 BBY- Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

In THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, the Rebel Alliance must operate in secret as the Empire relentlessly hunts them down. Luke Skywalker travels to Dagobah in order to train as a Jedi under the instruction of Master Yoda. Meanwhile, Han and Leia must seek refuge from Darth Vader in the company of Han’s old friend, Lando Calrissian.

4 ABY- Moving Target (2015)

This junior novel follows the devastating events of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, in which Princess Leia must lead a group of Rebels on a dangerous decoy mission as she continues to fight against the same Empire that is relentlessly hunting her down.

4 BBY- Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

In RETURN OF THE JEDI, Luke and Leia travel to Tatooine and free Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. The trio then regroups with the Rebel Alliance as they plan an attack on the Empire that will cripple it for good. However, Luke recognizes that he must leave his friends and face his father, Darth Vader, and try to redeem him from the Emperor’s powerful hold.

4 BBY- Battlefront II (2017)

The single-player story campaign of this highly anticipated game will predominantly follow Iden Versio, leader of the Imperial Special Forces unit known as Inferno Squad, as she and her team avenge the Emperor. The story will span 30 years and feature many fan favorite characters, old and new.

4 ABY- Shattered Empire (2015)

A crossover between the MARVEL’S STAR WARS and DOCTOR APHRA series, this comic pairs Luke Skywalker with the rogue archaeologist as they embark on a mission to the heart of the notorious Screaming Citadel.

5 ABY- Aftermath (2015)

This novel also takes place after RETURN OF THE JEDI, and tells the story of surviving Imperial leaders as they attempt to regroup and plan a counterattack against the Rebel Alliance, who now call themselves the New Republic. The Imperial leaders are thwarted by some locals as the New Republic fleet arrives to hunt down remaining Imperials.

5 ABY- Aftermath: Life Debt (2016)

LIFE DEBT follows Norra Wexley and her team as they embark on a mission to rescue Han Solo and Chewie after they disappear in the attempt to free the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk. Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Rae Sloane fights to take control of the broken Imperial forces.

5 ABY- Aftermath: Empire's End (2017)

EMPIRE’S END will conclude Chuck Wendig’s AFTERMATH trilogy and will feature the climactic Battle of Jakku, which marks the end of the Galactic Civil War and the Empire.

5 BBY- Uprising (2015)

Set after the Battle of Endor in RETURN OF THE JEDI, this mobile game focuses on the Empire’s reaction as it tries to lock down the Anoat sector. Those within the sector, including freedom fighters, smugglers, and bounty hunters, must band together to create an uprising against the Empire’s tight grip.

28 ABY- Bloodline (2016)

This novel, set just a few years before THE FORCE AWAKENS, follows Senator Leia Organa as she fights to defend the New Republic Senate from threats both within and outside the Republic. When the galaxy learns the shocking truth of Leia’s true parentage, she must find her place within the New Republic she fought so hard to establish.

30 ABY- Phasma (2017)

In PHASMA, author Delilah S. Dawson will explore the backstory of the First Order captain leading up to the events of THE FORCE AWAKENS. Once more details are confirmed, we’ll place the novel in the correct position on the timeline.

34 ABY- C-3PO (2016)

This single issue comic explores the origins behind C-3PO’s red arm, which was first seen in THE FORCE AWAKENS.

34 ABY- Poe Dameron (2016)

This ongoing comic series follows Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron, before we first see him in THE FORCE AWAKENS. The story also dives into his relationship with the droid BB-8, and the Resistance’s struggle to fight off the First Order.

34 ABY- Before the Awakening (2015)

This junior novel focuses on the lives of Finn (or FN-2187 as he was known in the First Order), Rey, and Poe Dameron before their paths crossed in THE FORCE AWAKENS. The novel offers more insight into these characters’ backgrounds before their lives are forever changed.

34 BBY- Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

THE FORCE AWAKENS is set 30 years after RETURN OF THE JEDI as we are introduced to Rey and Finn who team up with Han Solo in an attempt to find the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker. The ruthless First Order, led by Supreme Leader Snoke and the mysterious Kylo Ren, is also desperate to find Luke in the attempt to rid the galaxy of the last remaining Jedi.

34 ABY- Captain Phasma (2017)

This comic series will explore what happened to the intimidating First Order captain following the destruction of Star Killer base as seen in THE FORCE AWAKENS.

34 ABY- The Legends of Luke Skywalker (2017)

This junior novel tells the story of a group of passengers aboard a cargo ship to Canto Bight who exchange stories about the legendary Luke Skywalker. Are these stories true or embellished from myth and tall tales? Some may even be confirmed as one or the other once THE LAST JEDI hits theaters.

34 ABY- Canto Bight (2017)

This novella contains a collection of short stories revolving around characters in the decadent casino city of Canto Bight. These characters will introduce audiences to the danger and intrigue of the lavish city before its appearance in THE LAST JEDI.

34 BBY- Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

In THE LAST JEDI, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of THE FORCE AWAKENS join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI opens in U.S. theaters on December 15, 2017, and is written & directed by Rian Johnson.

35 BBY- Episode IX (2019)

This film will follow the events of THE LAST JEDI and officially conclude the sequel trilogy that began with THE FORCE AWAKENS. JJ Abrams will return to both direct and co-write the script with Chris Terrio. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Check back again for more details as they are released.
