Vader was originally going to destroy the calamari ship, and the Tantive IV gets away as that happens, and then he goes chasing after that. One of the editors, Jabez Olssen, said they should get Vader on that ship, and they didn’t think it would happen because it was only 3-4 months before release. Kennedy approved it though.
